Vertigo vs Dizziness: When Should You See an ENT Specialist?

They sound alike but they are not the same. Understand the difference and know which symptoms need prompt attention.

People use “dizzy” for everything from light-headedness to a room that will not stop spinning. Doctors separate these because the causes, and the treatments, are different.

What is vertigo?

Vertigo is a spinning sensation. It often starts in the inner ear, where tiny crystals or fluid-filled canals help the brain sense movement. When they misbehave, you feel as though you are moving even when you are still.

Common causes

BPPV, inner-ear inflammation and Ménière’s disease are frequent ENT causes. Many cases respond well to positional manoeuvres, medicines and exercises.

Red flags

Dizziness with weakness of a limb, slurred speech, double vision, a severe sudden headache or fainting needs emergency care, as it can point to a problem in the brain rather than the ear.
